WE CONSULT ON THE FOLLOWING:
ECOLOGICAL - Environmental Management Plans
- Something no farm can go without.
- An EMP is a valuable tool to ensure best management practice on your farm. It is almost impossible to ensure that your farm is managed towards goals and objectives without the aid or foundation that an EMP provides.
- An EMP is basically a total inventory on the ecological status of your farm. Describing the vegetation, game, geology, topography, water sources and quality thereof. We can calculate the carrying capacity of each vegetation community and the farm as a whole. The recommended stocking densities will also be calculated. Different management units will be delineated and management strategies will be put in place according to your goals and objectives. This just to name a few aspects of the EMP.
- Continuous adaptive management may ensue. This can be done either by Kalanchoe or Kalanchoe can inform the management of the farm about the basic monitoring methodology.
- Continuous adaptive management consists of continuous monitoring of the different aspects of the farm (e.g. vegetation, game, water) and according to the change be it positive or negative will ensure the adjustment of the strategy of the EMP.
- An EMP ensures positive and strategic management choices and can spare the owner valuable time and money.
- An accurate EMP does take a long time to compile but if the owner require haste Kalanchoe can organize an array of consultants to conduct the field work simultaneously.
- Only scientifically recognized methodology will be used by Kalanchoe to gain and process the data.
- Example of an EMP on a small sized game farm:
- Details: 1000 hectares in extent in the Loskopdam area of South Africa
- Use of own vehicles and free accommodation on farm.
- Will take approximately 3-5 months for fieldwork, data processing and write-up of report.
- +- R 68 000 incl. VAT.
- The farm owner can opt for different levels of accuracy and this will influence the cost as well. The price above will include a thorough assessment. For a less detailed EMP the same scenario can cost the owner between R 32 000 and R 45 000 VAT inclusive.
- Please note this is just an estimation as various variables need to be taken into consideration such as diversity on farm, accessibility, season etc.

- Best management Practice
- Here we consult you to best achieve your goals and objectives on your game farm. You might already have a management plan in place but are unable to achieve the goals and objectives depicted in it or maybe have new goals and want to adjust the management plan accordingly.
- We will assess and modify the management plan to ensure that you keep with the intended strategy.
- This to ensure that all stakeholders are confident and satisfied in the management of the game farm.
- If the farm does not have an existing EMP one needs to be composed to ensure best management practice.
- Pre-purchase farm assessments
- Do you want to purchase a game farm but do not have the necessary information to conclude that the farm would be adequate towards your needs?
- An owner can quickly make the mistake of buying property to use as a game farm with set goals and objectives but actually that specific farm will not meet these needs.
- Kalanchoe will assess the farm on your behalf (before you purchase the farm) and supply advice on whether this farm is right for you.
- Examples of questions to be answered by Kalanchoe:
- Can the farm sustain the animals you are interested in?
- Has the veld been mismanaged and needs restoration?
- Will the farm meet the needs of the potential buyer?
- Supplementary Feeding Plans
- Compilation of a supplementary feeding regime for either animals in captivity or free ranging.
- Components that needs to be supplemented will be determined through literature reviews, procurement of relevant data and laboratory tests if needed.
- Supplementary feeding budget layout. We will determine the annual costs related to the supplementary feeding of animals on your farm.
- Adjust your current feeding regime if necessary to increase production potential of your game.
- Breeding (intensive / extensive) Management Plans
- Breeding camp layout and infrastructure recommendations
- Game allocation and stocking density recommendations
- Optimum production recommendations
- Insight on necessary permits and permit restrictions
- The incorporation of GIS on your farm
- GIS or Geographical Information System can be implemented to optimize the ecological and infrastructural management on your farm.
- This is a software based program which enables you to compose and maintain intricate maps of your farm.
- Please note that this is an expensive program and satellite images needs to be purchased. To completely benefit from the program the person that will be using it will have to complete a course to become competent.
- Ecological Restoration Plans
- Erosion control (sheet / donga / potential etc.) recommendations
- Vegetation restoration and monitoring (continuous)
- Alien invasive control recommendations
- These are only management plans and Kalanchoe will not physically perform the tasks / labour to ensure restoration, rather guide the reserve staff as to the best strategy to ensure restoration success.
- Parasite control plans
- Parasites be it internal or external can have a major influence on the general health of your animals. Infestations can lead to health problems, thus affecting the production potential of your game and even lead to the loss of animals.
- Kalanchoe can give you advice or even a strategic plan (annual budget plan included) to combat these parasitic infestations on your farm.
- Advice on which techniques or apparatus will work best in certain scenarios.
- Aquaculture Management Plans
- Our consultants can give you advice on what type of aquaculture project will most probably succeed on your farm.
- Kalanchoe can also compose a management plan for an existing aquaculture project or new projects.
- Aid in the acquisition of various fish species for your project.
- Aid in infrastructural planning of ponds / dams.
- Advice on necessary permits and restrictions concerning an aquaculture project.

- Vegetation condition assessments
- Do you want to know the condition of your veld and the amount of animals that can be sustained on your farm?
- Kalanchoe will perform a vegetation condition assessment and a phytosociological classification (delineation of the various vegetation communities present on your farm which acts as management units) which will give you a thorough description / inventory of your veld
- Includes:
- Ecological carrying capacity estimations
- Game stocking recommendations
- Vegetation community classifications
- Vegetation monitoring, continuous if the farm owner prefers
- Burning plans
- Composition of a burning plan for the farm
- Strategic or management burning
- Composition of a plan for fire breaks
- Game re / introduction
- Kalanchoe will assess your reserve (ecologically and with regard to legal aspects) to determine which animals can be sustained on your farm
- Indigenous plant reintroduction or reclamation
- If you want to restore a previous plant population that is locally extinct on your farm or in the area we might be able to assist depending on the circumstances of it becoming locally extinct or even frail in the first place
- Kalanchoe will assess the situation and can help in the acquisition of these plants
- Total game census (game counts)
- Kalanchoe can organize an aerial count on your farm using either a fixed wing aircraft or helicopter. This is an fairly accurate method but expensive
- If you do not have the finances to conduct an aerial count our consultants can make use of various other scientific reputable methods to perform the game count
- Game monitoring
- Camera traps (animal species identification or individual identification kits composition)
- GPS / telemetry tracking. Kalanchoe will analyse the data with quarterly reports to the game farm. There needs to be a responsible person on the farm who needs to collect the data Kalanchoe can organize this or it will be the responsibility of the farm owner, under supervision of Kalanchoe.
- Equipment purchased by the game farm and thus the property of the game farm
- Small mammal surveys
- Herpetology surveys (reptiles & amphibians) and monitoring
